India's export value - data definitions

export-value-annual.csv is an Indiconomics reconstruction from OECD Trade in Value Added (TiVA) estimates. It accompanies "How Indian Is India's Export Boom?" at /reading/a04.html. It is a frozen extract, not a live data feed.

Coverage and source

India's exports to the world, calendar years 2015-2022. OECD TiVA 2025 edition, flow OECD.STI.PIE:DSD_TIVA_MAINLV@DF_MAINLV(1.1), measures EXGR, EXGR_DVA and EXGR_FVA. The raw response was retrieved on 5 September 2026 at 15:13:42.595443 UTC. The saved response controls these calculations; a flow version number alone does not guarantee that a future response is unchanged.

Scope codes

ALL All activities (OECD code _T). MFG Manufacturing (C). MFG_X_C19 Manufacturing excluding coke and refined petroleum (C minus C19). C26 Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (C26). SERV Services excluding construction (GTT). ALL_X_C19 All activities excluding coke and refined petroleum (_T minus C19).

The two exclusions are calculated here, rather than separate OECD series. These six scopes overlap: do not sum them. C26 covers more than phones. Industry classification refers to the industry exporting the product, not the origin industry of every contribution to its value added.

Columns and units

scope: the category defined above. year: calendar year. gross_usd_million: gross exports, current US dollars in millions. dva_usd_million: value added generated in India embodied in those exports, current US dollars in millions. fva_usd_million: value added generated outside India embodied in those exports, current US dollars in millions. dva_share_percent: 100 times dva_usd_million divided by gross_usd_million. accounting_residual_usd_million: gross minus domestic minus foreign value added. Published numerical discrepancies are retained, not forced to zero.

Divide monetary columns by 1,000 to obtain the article's USD billion units. A difference between two shares is in percentage points. The CSV keeps calculation precision for reproducibility; these decimals do not establish equivalent measurement precision or provide confidence intervals.

Interpretation

TiVA uses model-based inter-country input-output estimates. Changes in these current-price values do not by themselves measure real production capability, productivity or a causal policy effect. Domestic origin does not establish domestic corporate ownership or where profits are ultimately retained. See the article's sources and method for the decomposition and its limits.
